Change the world

The Sol Plaatje Residence started observing Earth Day in 2023. It started by addressing the fundamental issue of unhygienic environments found in public residence constitutions. The public residence constitution entities contributed about 45% of waste, which is by led the manufacturing industries. This has been a challenge for years, as in some parts of Africa, campaigns and projects have been initiated to clean up water sources.

With a firm commitment to environmental stewardship, the Sol Plaatje Residence took the initiative to manage its waste effectively. Students and House Comms actively participated in this endeavor, ensuring their waste was properly disposed of at the designated mass waste site. They also learned about waste categorization, making it easier for the collectors. The event's primary objective was to cultivate responsible citizenship, a core value of the residence blueprint.

It is crucial for students to understand that their actions extend beyond the immediate environment. By promoting a clean, hygienic, and healthy environment, they are benefiting the well-being of their immediate surroundings and contributing to the global effort to address climate change-related issues. Their role is significant, and their actions matter.

The event has borne amazing fruits. During the House Keepers' massive strikes, the student residents took leadership in the hygiene of their units and made it a point to communicate their needs. This was a beautiful reflection on the importance of instilling values and the power of unity, as the impact of the strike was not as brutal to student hygiene as was anticipated.
