Change the world

Nelson Mandela Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa — March, 2024

The National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) strike has entered its fourth week, significantly affecting the daily lives of students residing at Sol Plaatje Residence. As housekeepers continue their strike, hygiene standards are at risk, posing serious challenges to academic excellence.

Hygiene Crisis at Sol Plaatje Residence

The ongoing strike has left our residence vulnerable to hygiene-related issues. Housekeepers play a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness and order within our living spaces. With their absence, common areas, bathrooms, and shared facilities have become increasingly unsanitary. The Sol Plaatje Management is fully aware of the circumstances faced by students during this critical period.

A Call for Responsible Action

In these trying times, we have an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to being a "house of responsible minds." As residents, we must come together to address the challenges posed by the strike. The house leaders are resolute in their determination to assist with available resources, but we need your cooperation.

Our Collective Responsibility

We urge all residents to actively participate in maintaining the good shape of our residence. Here's how you can contribute:

1. Collaborate in Cleaning: Let's make it a norm to collaborate in cleaning common areas. Regularly disinfect surfaces, sweep floors, and keep our shared spaces tidy.

2. Trash Disposal: Take responsibility for taking out trash bags promptly. Proper waste management is essential for our well-being.

3. Pest Control: Eliminate any signs of pest infestations in our units. Report any issues promptly to the residence management.

Together, We Can Overcome

As we face this crisis together, we appreciate your cooperation and understanding. Let's work hand in hand to ensure Sol Plaatje remains a safe and hygienic environment for all. Our commitment extends to the incoming brothers and sisters who will call this residence home.
